Finland’s First Live Sewing Competition: Mestarinuppu – A Weekend Full of Sewing and Live Broadcasts!

Nuppu Print Company is organizing a sewing competition on October 31–November 2, in search of the most talented Nuppu sewing enthusiast. Throughout the weekend, contestants will take on a variety of sewing challenges, and on Sunday, the Mestarinuppu (Master Nuppu) will be crowned.

The competition will be broadcast live on Nuppu’s YouTube channel and Facebook page, offering plenty of engaging content for sewing fans all weekend long. In addition to the eight amazing contestants, the project features professional photographers from Centre de Ville, led by Ville Syrjäläinen, and host Kreetta Ahonen, well-known to Finnish craft lovers from the Kässämessut netissä virtual fair live shows.

“We’ve been talking about hosting our own sewing competition for years, and now finally felt like the right time to make it happen. Our goal is to create a fun and positive experience for everyone – we’re hoping to see lots of great successes over the weekend, even if there will surely be some intense moments too! And as we’ve told the contestants, we organizers are definitely just as nervous as they are,” says Jenni Sundberg, co-founder of Nuppu and the creator of the sewing competition.

Sewing enthusiasts from all over Finland applied to join the competition, and the following talented participants will showcase their skills at Nuppu’s studio in Lauttasaari, Helsinki:

Home Participation

It’s also possible to join the competition from home!

A special materials kit is available, containing fabrics and supplies for adapting the competition challenges to a home setting. The kit includes one previously unpublished sewing pattern, available in eight different Nuppu prints. Some materials can also be sourced from participants’ own sewing collections. Among home participants, one winner will be both selected and drawn by lot.

The tasks will involve both following ready-made patterns and using creativity to modify and personalize designs. The challenges will cover sewing with both knits and woven fabrics, using sewing machines, sergers, and coverstitch machines. For one task – a costume challenge on Sunday – participants can prepare in advance by planning the design, drafting patterns, and even cutting the fabric ahead of time. Throughout the weekend, there will also be unexpected twists and surprises.

Judging and Guests

The head judge of the competition is Outi Lähetkangas, Nuppu’s sewing instructor and the author behind the Nuppunen pattern books. The weekend will also feature guest judges, including Nuppu’s designer Satu Kontinen. Naturally, the entire Nuppu team will be part of the broadcasts as well.
